Roger Fernandes, NW Native Storyteller. Roger Fernandes, or Kawasa, is a member of the Lower Elwha Band of the S’Klallam Indians from the Port Angeles, Washington area. He describes himself as an urban Indian as his mother, Violet Charles, moved to the city of Seattle where he was born in 1951. Roger is from a family of four brothers who are all active doing various cultural things like singing, basket making, artwork and storytelling. Roger has had a regular presence at Pathfinder K-8 School, where Pastor Kindem’s children Kai and Naomi attend. We are honored to have Roger join us to share some stories about birds of our region and the roles they play within the history and mythology of Native cultures. We will be marching as the “Loving Lutherans of the NW Washington Synod” sponsored by Open Door Ministries. We are contingent number 108 and will be gathering on Sunday, June 24th in downtown Seattle on 4th Avenue between Marion and Columbia streets. (Right behind the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; look for the Open Door Ministries sign.) The march is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am, but because of the large number of participants, our contingent generally does not begin moving forward until noon. All welcoming ELCA congregations and organizations are invited to join us in this annual witness of God’s inclusive love for all. The theme this year is “Pride Beyond Borders” recognizing the intersectionality in our community, celebrating our differences, our history, and where we come from. But it is also a reminder that even as we celebrate the successes and strides of our history, but there is work to be done to keep our communities free, happy, and safe. Your contact for Pride Sunday will be Open Door’s chaplain Pastor Rick Pribbernow. You can reach him at either (425) 359-9313 or rickopendoorministries@gmail.com.
