Sermon Title: Of Orcas and Incarnation

(John 6:51-58)

Rev. Erik Kindem, August 19, 2018

Quick Summary:

Residents of the Puget Sound region and around the world have been captivated by the fate of the resident orca whales who struggle for survival. Recently a mother in the J-pod, named Tahlequah, carried her dead calf for 17 days and 1000 miles in a rite of grief that captured the world's heart. Another emaciated orca is now the focus of concern of NOAA scientists and Lummi Tribal leaders.

What does Jesus' invitation, "eat my flesh," have to do with the orcas of the Salish Sea? Do the words from the prologue to John's gospel, "And the Word became flesh and lived among us" have import for the systemic challenges which face Earth's life-systems, including the orcas?
