Sermon Title: Playing Second Fiddle

(Mark 9:30-37)

Rev. Erik Kindem, September 20, 2015

Quick Summary:

Someone once asked Leonard Bernstein, legendary conductor of the New York Philharmonic: WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT INSTRUMENT TO PLAY? Without missing a beat he answered: SECOND FIDDLE.

When Jesus tells his apprentices the truth about where the path they’re on is heading, they have no clue what he’s talking about. In fact, Mark says, they got into a debate over WHICH OF THEM IS THE GREATEST. Rather than reprimand them, Jesus makes this a teachable moment: WHOEVER WANTS TO BE FIRST MUST BE LAST OF ALL AND SERVANT OF ALL.

How do we learn to serve in a culture obsessed with playing first fiddle?
