Sermon Title: Ingesting Jesus

(John 6:56-69)

Rev. Erik Kindem, August 23, 2015

Quick Summary:

In his final comments on the subject of bread, Jesus manages to offend even his followers to the point where most of them no longer want to hang out with him. His offence? The relationship he calls for is a bit too organic for them: he calls them (and us) into a relationship of total intimacy; a relationship of abiding so completely with him that we can't tell where he ends and where we begin. When we take Jesus into us in the Holy Communion, he becomes such a part of who we are that we become for others what he became for us: bread for the world.

The story of one lawyer turned firefighter facing down flames for the sake of neighbors in Okanogan territory illustrates the REACHING TOWARD NEIGHBOR theme that threads its way through the Scriptures.
